BIO

I have lived in small New England towns for over 30 years. My wife, Cheryl Bascomb, and I enjoy outdoor sports & activities on the rivers, lakes and coast, as well as in the Adirondacks and White Mountains. I grew up in rural upstate New York before graduating from Dartmouth College. I now live on the Connecticut River in Lyme, NH near Dartmouth where my wife now works, and where I teach a graduate course in environmental journalism. I am also a Senior Fellow with the Conservation Law Foundation working primarily on clean water issues.
After 30+ years working as an environmental professional in government, business & consulting, I am now a writer & photographer. My second book, Storied Waters, was released in October 2019 from Stackpole Books. Part travelogue, part literary history, part natural history and part fishing porn, the book recounts my epic six-week odyssey to visit over 35 fabled fly fishing destinations mentioned in literature, from Maine to Wisconsin and back with 80-some photos from my trip.
I was the instigator and lead author of The Confluence- A Collection of Essays, Art & Tall Tales about Fly-fishing & Friendship (Peter E. Randall Publishers, 2016), written with six close friends from college about our 20+ years of fishing adventures in the deep woods of northern New Hampshire. We have been thrilled with the response to this unusual group memoir which went to a second printing in 2019. We enjoy hearing how our shared experiences and stories in seven voices resonate with so many readers.
I write a monthly column for The Maine Sportsman magazine called "The Sporting Environment" about environmental issues that affect our beloved outdoor activities. My freelance articles have appeared in Northern Woodlands, Maine Sunday Telegram, Interface Business News, and other publications. I'm a proud and active member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America.
My fresh air photography (see below) focuses on outdoor activities, nature and the built environment. I enjoy shooting interesting structures and "portraits" of outdoor statues.
I am always interested in challenging writing and photography assignments, so give me a call. Perhaps I'll see you on the water. And, don't forget to always watch your backcast.
